Ankle. Crew. Quarter length. Knee high. Chances are, you grab a pair of socks every morning without giving it too much thought. Well, Iowa State student entrepreneur Rebecca Lyons (’19 agricultural education) wants you to look at your sock drawer in an entirely different light. Because for Lyons’ company Lunchsox, they’re not just socks – they’re a vehicle to end childhood hunger.
That’s why for every pair of Lunchsox sold, they give back to programs that focus on providing nutritious meals for children who desperately need them. It’s a cause that’s close to Lyons’ heart. “As a farmer and someone who has witnessed the effects of hunger, I am passionate about feeding those in need,” said Lyons. “I particularly see hunger among youth as the greatest horror, as it is hard to excel academically and socially when one’s physical needs fail to be met.”
So how did Lyons come up with this inspirational company? By participating in Iowa State entrepreneurship courses and programs like CYstarters and the Agricultural Entrepreneurship Initiative’s Student Incubator. However, what may be surprising is that before Lyons got to Iowa State, she hadn’t considered a path in entrepreneurship. Said Lyons, “Before coming here, I never realized that I could pave my own career path by being myself and using my creativity. Through my entrepreneurial studies courses and entrepreneurship programs, I’ve learned practical business skills needed for owning a business, as well as many life lessons.”
As you can see, the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well at Iowa State. If you want to make an impact on the world in a meaningful way, consider an adventure with us. Here you’ll find everything you could possibly want to ensure you’re successful from head to toe.
